Eternally Left at the Altar
Disneyland Paris' Phantom Manor features as morose and dark of a backstory as one will ever find at a Disney park. Home to the Ravenswood family, it features the malevolent and controlling Henry Ravensworth, the vicious, gold-seeking operator of Thunder Mesa whose possessiveness extends beyond riches to include his own daughter, Melanie. A beautiful young woman, Melanie was the target of many a suitor, which her father frequently quelled by killing them in cold blood. But after Henry and his wife, Martha, were killed in a cave-in at the mines of the nearby Big Thunder Mountain, and Melanie met and fell in love with a train conductor named Jake, it seemed like the young lady would finally receive her happily ever after.
But on the day of her wedding, a mysterious phantom appeared at the Ravenswood home and lured Jake to the attic and hang him by a noose high above the house. The despondent Melanie waited all day for her betrothed, but Jake never returned. Ignorant of her fiance's fate, Melanie spent the rest of her days waiting, convincing her self that "some day," her Jake would come.
But he never did. A dark, sobering secret cursing this haunted mansion on the hill at the far end of Thunder Mesa.
The forlorn Melanie Ravenswood waits for a doomed groom who will never return. |
