There are a lot of reasons why I think Phantom Manor is the best haunted mansion of all the Disney parks, and the grand scene at the start of the ride is one of them. In the original Haunted Mansion in Anaheim, the backdrop is pretty much all dark, livening up only during the Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay. But in Paris, there's a whole scene, with the ill-fated daughter of Henry Ravenswood looking out the window to a stormy scene, sobbing over her vanished betrothed. It's an immediately haunting scene that preludes a dark and somber attraction. What a way to grab one's attention from the start!
