Most people probably forget this, because the Buena Vista Street Five and Dime is so prominently displayed, but
Disneyland had a Five and Dime long before Disney California Adventure launched its five year makeover plan. In turn-of-the-20th-century America, "five and dimes" were basically variety stores and early ancestors of the modern department store. They offered a diverse assortment of wares and were fixtures of many downtowns, playing a sort of general store feel. Of course, since Mickey's Toontown is a classical town in its own animated right, it's natural to have a Five and Dime here. It's just a shame that since it's tucked away in the back of the park, it's largely lost attention to its more noticeably positioned neighbor.
